If you have more trouble getting the server running (I dont think you will), you can try my new manual installation package.  Your plight spurred me on to get it done.  Smile

its in both places, (placed automatically by installer and manually by me).  maybe that is the problem.  i've tried pointing it in both directions.  i didn't realize that it was automatically installed.  in the instruction box that pops up when you try to start up the server it says you need to download the REMR.FDB and install it to a directory, thats why i did that.

It really sounds as though Firebird and/or ODBC is not working.

You got the prompt from Synapse because it couldn't find an ODBC connection and so assumed you were doing a manual/wizard install.

Check in your windows control panel to make sure the Firebird service is running in services.  This is a more detailed manual on testing the firebird installation.

If it is, then firebird is working but ODBC is not.  At this point I suggest you roll back using system restore and do a manual install of everything.  I don't know why but sometimes the ODBC driver has a problem getting installed correctly.

ok thanks, i'll try what you've suggested and see what happens.

i might just have to buck up and pay for installation.

Supporting the author of Synapse financially in this way isn't a bad option!

    Re: firebird OBDC driver

Anybody with any idea why Firebird can not connect to database and actually says that remr.fdb is not a valid database, under Win7 x 64.

Firebird 2.1.3 (x64), ODBC (x64) ; Firebird running as a service. Driver listed everywhere. Spent a whole day, trying to resolve the issue.

By the way empty database cannot be downloaded by that system.

    Re: firebird OBDC driver

I personally have never tried firebird with 64 bit windows ....

Can you open the sample databases that come with Firebird?

If so, then what you might need to do is open up remr.fdb under a 32 bit version, create the transportable backup file from it i.e. remr.fbk ( using gbak), and then restore that on the 64 bit system.

The ODS might be different ...

    Re: firebird OBDC driver

An alternative is to run the Windows XP virtual PC built into Windows 7 Prof/Ultimate editions.

    That is a 32 bit version ...

So, you would run the synapse-server on the virtual XP, and run the client on the 64 bit side.

Graham ... can you make a 64-bit version of REMR.fdb ?   ... in the method you describe ?

    Re: firebird OBDC driver

I don't have any PCs running 64 bit windows.

As I said above George needs to test the sample dbs that come with FB to see if his installation is the issue, or it truly is an ODS problem.

create the transportable backup file from it i.e. remr.fbk ( using gbak)

make a remr.fbk for him to import.
