A Synapse is found inside a brain ... of course. You might want to download a free version of the personal brain from http://www.thebrain.com/ and see if you can use it as mind mapping software.
It might also be useful for user documentation .. someone writes something, and uploads it somewhere. Others download their brain dump and import it into their copy.
